Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles, Pabitra Margherita, paid a courtesy call on Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka during his official visit to the island nation. The meeting followed his participation as Guest of Honour at the 146th Girmit Day celebrations, a significant national event in Fiji.
The two leaders engaged in meaningful discussions on strengthening India-Fiji relations, particularly across areas of mutual interest such as development cooperation, cultural exchange, and community engagement.
Sharing the update on social media, Margherita posted on X: “Honoured to call on H.E. @slrabuka, Prime Minister of Fiji, in Labasa following the Girmit Day celebrations. Had meaningful discussions on deepening India-Fiji bilateral cooperation across key sectors.”
During the Girmit Day ceremony, which commemorates the arrival and contributions of Indian indentured labourers—the Girmitiyas—to Fiji, Margherita paid tribute to their legacy of resilience and sacrifice, describing them as the foundation of Fiji’s vibrant multicultural society.
Alongside PM Rabuka, the minister presented awards to descendants of Girmitiyas and commended the Fijian government for officially declaring Girmit Day a national holiday, honouring the Indian community’s contributions to the country’s history.
On Monday, the Minister also virtually inaugurated a new Yoga Centre in Seaqaqa, which he said symbolizes the deep cultural and historical links between India and Fiji. The centre is expected to serve as a hub for promoting wellness and holistic health.
Margherita further engaged with members of the Indian diaspora, acknowledging their role in fostering strong people-to-people ties.
The visit was part of his official tour to New Zealand and Fiji from May 8–12, as outlined by India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
India and Fiji share a long-standing relationship dating back to 1879, when the first group of Indian indentured workers arrived. Since then, ties have expanded through cultural, economic, and diplomatic channels, including the establishment of a High Commission in Suva post Fiji’s independence in 1970.
